UI undergrads tackle pressing health problems

In UI research labs, students learn life lessons and contribute to scientific discovery
Researchers at the UI’s Pappajohn Biomedical Discovery Building are working to eradicate diseases like diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s—and they rely on undergraduates for help. As early as their first year, UI undergrads get hands-on research experience and make important contributions to their fields.

Geyer, Kohen named 2015 AAAS Fellows

Two University of Iowa faculty members have been named fellows by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Pamela Geyer, in biochemistry and obstetrics and gynecology, and Amnon Kohen, in chemistry, will be honored at the AAAS annual meeting in February.

When Grant Young came to the University of Iowa four years ago, it was an easy choice to major in biochemistry and pre-med. His urge to volunteer kicked in, leading to work in the Burn Treatment Center and as a research assistant studying the genetic mutations that cause muscular dystrophy.
