This spring, more than 5,400 University of Iowa students will receive their degrees during in-person and livestreamed commencement ceremonies, beginning with the College of Pharmacy’s Doctor of Pharmacy ceremony May 11 and concluding with the College of Dentistry’s ceremony June 2.

In a new study, a research team led by the University of Iowa identified three genes that when deleted cause cleft lip or palate, a facial deformation that occurs in about 1 in every 1,600 babies born in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The bulk of concussions in kids are related to youth sports, said Dr. Andrew Peterson, clinical professor of pediatrics and director of primary care sports medicine at the University of Iowa. The good news is that there is not strong evidence that a handful of concussions over a childhood is associated with long term impacts as an adult, he added.
