Students asked to check in at individual residence halls
Thursday, August 15, 2019

You'll see a lot more black and gold around Iowa City next week as the University of Iowa welcomes first-year students moving into residence halls. That means it’s important to be patient—a lot of construction is taking place on and off campus.

Residence hall move-in for new students will be scheduled in shifts from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 20; Wednesday, Aug. 21; and Thursday, Aug. 22.

Student move-in likely will increase traffic and cause delays each day. To accommodate move-in and avoid construction, Clinton Street will be reduced to one-way northbound traffic beginning at the corner of Clinton and Market streets, continuing through the right-hand turn where Clinton becomes Church Street, and ending at the intersection of Church and Dubuque streets. On the west side of campus, families and students should plan to use Grand Avenue to get to the residence halls.

Faculty and staff traveling to campus should plan to take alternate routes.

Traffic also is expected to be heavy around all residence halls. Students using trailers or moving trucks are strongly encouraged to arrive at their residence hall after 6 p.m. on move-in days.

All students should report directly to their residence hall, where they will receive specific parking and unloading directions. Students also have been given specific driving directions to access campus in order to minimize traffic disruptions. As in previous years, nearly 500 volunteers will assist students as they unload their belongings on these important days.

All students also will have the option of moving in early on Sunday, Aug. 18, from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 to 5 p.m. by signing up online. Students should report directly to residence halls, and a limited number of volunteers will be available. There is an early move-in fee of $35/day.

Returning students will move in on Saturday, Aug. 24.
