Kevin Kregel has been appointed executive vice provost and senior associate provost for faculty at the University of Iowa. Kregel most recently served as associate provost for faculty, a position he held since September 2014. He began the new role July 15.

Kregel received a bachelor’s degree and doctorate (physiology and biophysics) from the UI and joined the faculty at Iowa in 1993 after performing a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Arizona. He served as department executive officer in the Department of Health and Human Physiology before he was appointed associate provost in 2014.

“Kevin brings a wealth of knowledge and leadership to this position,” says UI Executive Vice President and Provost Montse Fuentes, who announced the appointment. “He is widely respected on our campus, and he is completely devoted to our pursuit of excellence in every area of our academic mission as an institution that puts students first.”

Kregel has a long record of service at Iowa, sitting on numerous collegiate and university committees, as well as participating in steering committees for two campuswide cluster-hire initiatives. He also served as acting associate provost for undergraduate education and dean of University College in 2018.

Kregel’s extramurally funded research laboratory at Iowa has focused on physiological adjustments to exercise, aging, and environmental challenges. He has also been active in leadership positions at the national level, including service as the chair of committees addressing science policy issues for the Federation of American Societies of Experimental Biology and the American Physiological Society.

Kregel will serve a three-year term through June 30, 2022. His appointment must be approved by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa.
