The Aug. 21 solar eclipse had the University of Iowa campus abuzz, with people flocking to viewing stations to catch a glimpse of this rare event. Overcast skies threatened to foil the momentous occasion, but the eclipse was visible. 

The University of Iowa had two viewing stations on campus during the eclipse. Each was equipped with telescopes and free eclipse-viewing glasses. Faculty, staff, and student experts were on hand to demonstrate safe viewing techniques and answer questions. The Department of Physics and Astronomy, the Sciences Library, and the UI Museum of Natural History co-sponsored the event.

Additionally, each new student received a pair of eclipse-viewing glasses when they arrived for the On Iowa! orientation program. The glasses were sponsored by the Department of Physics and Astronomy, the UI Astronomy Club, and the Center for Student Involvement and Leadership Coca-Cola Program.
