Who: The University of Iowa

What: The University of Iowa will host its 2015 Biomass Fuel Project Field Day. The Biomass Fuel Project was recently recognized as a recipient of the Iowa Governor's Environmental Excellence Award.

When: Aug. 25, 9 a.m.-noon

Where: The University of Iowa Hawkeye Commuter Lot; Hawkeye Park Road, Iowa City, IA 52246

Why: To educate the community about the project goals, and give attendees the opportunity to tour the University Power Plant and established biomass fuel plots.

  • The goal of the UI Biomass Fuel Project is to develop sources of locally grown, sustainable biomass that can be used as fuel in the University Power Plant, part of the UI’s strategy to achieve 40 percent renewable energy by 2020.
  • Giant miscanthus is a perennial crop that provides environmental benefits such as reductions in soil loss and compaction, reduction of nitrogen runoff, and an increase in soil carbon sequestration.
  • The University of Iowa announced in March that Repreve Renewables had been chosen to provide crop development services for the Biomass Fuel Project.
  • The University of Iowa and Repreve Renewables are partnering with local landowners to grow the crop for the university’s use.
