Faculty—

An amicus curiae brief written by Andy Grewal, UI associate professor in the College of Law, was cited by the United States Supreme Court in its decision in the case United States v. Woods, handed down Dec. 3.

Frederick Domann, professor in the departments of Radiation Oncology, Surgery, and Pathology, has been named Fellow of the Society of Free Radical Biology and Medicine (SFRBM). The award is given to members who have made outstanding contributions to the association as well as the field of free radical chemistry, redox biology, and antioxidants.

Domann was inducted at the SFRBM 2013 meeting Nov. 20-24 in San Antonio, Texas.

Domann was also elected to the Council of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine.

Keith Stroyan, professor in the Department of Mathematics, was awarded a 2013 Wolfram Innovator Award. The award was presented at the annual Wolfram Technology Conference Oct. 21-23 in Champaign, Ill.

Michelle Scherer, professor and departmental executive officer of civil and environmental engineering and faculty research engineer at IIHR—Hydroscience & Engineering, has been appointed to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Science Advisory Board (SAB) environmental engineering committee for a three-year term that started in November.

The SAB environmental engineering committee provides independent advice to the EPA administrator, through the chartered SAB, on risk management technologies to control and prevent pollution.

David Gompper, professor of composition and theory in the UI School of Music and director of the UI Center for New Music, is one of 12 composers selected to receive this year’s commissions from Fromm Music Foundation Board of Directors at Harvard University.

These commissions represent one of the principal ways that the Fromm Music Foundation seeks to strengthen composition and to bring contemporary concert music closer to the public. In addition to the commissioning award, a subsidy is available for the ensemble performing the premiere of the commissioned work. Previous recipients include Luciano Berio, Elliott Carter, Leon Kirchner, Augusta Read Thomas, Gabriela Lena Frank, Chaya Czernowin, Roger Reynolds, and many more of today’s leading composers.

The Fromm Foundation is the legacy of Paul Fromm (1906-1987), one of the most significant patrons of contemporary art music in the U.S. in the second half of the 20th century. Since the 1950s, the foundation has commissioned well over 300 new compositions and their performances, and has sponsored hundreds of new music concerts and concert series.

Students—

The Tippie College of Business’ Young Altruistic Professionals Association raised $10,000 for the Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center during a month-long fundraiser, November to Remember.

The University of Iowa Army ROTC Cadets participated in a unique annual training event, combat water survival training (CWST).

Cadets begin by swimming continuously for 10 minutes then treading water for an additional five minutes. Next, they completed a 3-meter drop into water, blind folded, carrying a mock M-16 rifle. They were also required to swim 15 meters in uniform with gear while holding a mock M-16 rifle out of water. For the last task, cadets were dropped into the pool, wearing load bearing equipment and holding a mock rifle. While underwater, they had to release the equipment, surface, and swim to the edge of the pool. Each task mimicked possible real life situations while operating in a military environment.

The Cadets of the Mighty Hawkeye Battalion completed their CWST event in the UI Fieldhouse swimming pool Nov. 21.
