The University of Iowa School of Music will present a performance by Kenneth Grant, professor of clarinet at the Eastman School of Music, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, in the University Capitol Centre Recital Hall in downtown Iowa City. The performance is a free, public event that is part of the Iowa Clarinet Festival held on the UI campus.

Grant will perform works by Bach, Brahms, Schumann, and Poulenc with UI clarinet professor Maurita Murphy Mead, as well as an unaccompanied piece titled Forms of Flight by Flynn.

Hailed as a virtuosic clarinetist, Grant’s orchestral experience includes the Cleveland Orchestra, Columbus Symphony, and he currently serves as principal clarinet with the Rochester Philharmonic. His premieres include the Clarinet Concerto by Sidney Hodkinson, the Concerto Movement by Benjamin Britten, Sonata for Clarinet/Piano and Fantasy Etudes by Verne Reynolds. He has been on faculty at Eastman School since 1987.

Grant will offer master classes Saturday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 4 p.m. in the UCC Recital Hall. A “Potpourri Recital” for all attending guest clarinet professors will be held at 5 p.m. in the same venue.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
