Tessa Mellas and Kate Milliken received the 2013 Iowa Short Fiction Awards, announced by the University of Iowa Press. Mellas won the 2013 Iowa Short Fiction Award for her collection "Lungs Full of Noise." Milliken received the 2013 John Simmons Short Fiction Award for "If I'd Known You Were Coming." Story

Jeffrey Murray has been awarded a $450,000, three-year grant that will allow him to build on his past discoveries in the area of premature birth with the goal of improving health care providers’ ability to predict which women are at high risk of delivering their baby too soon. Story

Ahmi Dhuna, a 10th grader at Burlington High School, earned top prize for her research examining antibacterial benefits of the Neem tree at the 2013 Regional Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS). The symposium drew middle school and high school students from across Iowa to campus where the top five researchers received scholarships and the opportunity to present at the national competition. Iowa Writers' Workshop alumnus D.A. Powell won the National Book Critics Circle Award for poetry, honored for Useless Landscape, or A Guide for Boys. The awards were announced Feb. 28 in New York City.

The University of Iowa Mock Trial Program sent two teams to the Cedar Rapids Regional Tournament in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Feb. 16 and 17. Teams 1481 and 1482 both competed and earned bids to the Opening Round Championship Series to be held in Saint Louis, Mo. March 15-17. Story
