Bike to Work Week May 13-17
What's happening? The Iowa City/Coralville Bike to Work Week challenges area commuters to ditch their cars and pedal to work. Save on parking, save on gas, and feel good about the planet.
Bike Commuter Breakfast: Stop by World of Bikes, 723 S. Gilbert St., from 7:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Monday, May 13 for homemade breakfast burritos and coffee. Proceeds will go to charity.
Need a shower? Recreation Services is offering free access to the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center, Field House, Fitness East/Halsey Hall, Recreation Building, and Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex all week (May 13-17) for anyone who visits prior to 9:00 a.m. and brings their bike helmet! Bikers can get in an extra workout, take a dip in the hot tub (only available at CRWC), or just use the showers.

The University of Iowa will hold its annual Rainbow Graduation Ceremony on Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at 6:00 PM in the Senate Chambers of the Old Capitol Museum.
This event celebrates the achievements of LGBTQ students and their allies. The program will feature UI faculty, staff, students, and community members, including Georgina Dodge, Lois Gray, Kim Marra, Jake Christensen, Kate Krohn, Abby Haywood, and John Paul Horn.

What's happening? The UIMA@IMU features an expansive installation of art from the Museum's permanent collection. The display, located on the third floor of the Iowa Memorial Union in the Richey Ballroom, covers a range of locales and periods, including Africa, China, and the Ancient Americas, as well as 20th-century European and American ceramics, conceptual art, and figurative art.

David Rhodes to read at Prairie Lights
What's happening? David Rhodes, whose book Driftless was the "All Iowa Reads" selection for 2010, returns to read from his new novel, Jewelweed. As a young man, David Rhodes worked in fields, hospitals, and factories across Iowa. After receiving an MFA from the Iowa Writers' Workshop, he published three acclaimed novels: The Last Fair Deal Going Down, The Easter House, and Rock Island Line.

Terrance Simien & The Zydeco Experience play on Ped Mall
What's happening? The University of Iowa’s Hancher will present Terrance Simien & The Zydeco Experience on Friday, May 17, at 6:30 p.m. in the Iowa City Pedestrian Mall, next to the Sheraton Hotel. The concert will kick off the 2013 edition of the Summer of the Arts Friday Night Concert Series.
Terrance Simien is an eighth generation Creole from the “Capital of Zydeco Music,” Mallet, La. His work is deeply influenced by the great masters of the Zydeco tradition; he was mentored by several of these pioneering artists and is known as the link between the next generation of zydeco players.

Rus Bradburd to read from "Make It, Take It"
What's happening? Rus Bradburd will read from Make It, Take It at 7 p.m. on Monday, May 20 at Prairie Lights Bookstore in downtown Iowa City.

What's happening? Local musician and former UI student Dave Zollo will perform on the Iowa City pedestrian plaza Friday, May 24, as part of the Friday Night Concert Series.
Zollo's music spans the genres of country, blues, folk, and rock. He sings, plays keyboards, and produces his own record label, Trailer Records.
The Friday Night Concert Series is a free, family-friendly event held on the pedestrian mall north of the Sheraton Iowa City Hotel from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Friday nights May through September.

Finkbine—named for W.O. Finkbine, who donated the land to the University—is located about a mile west of the main campus at the intersection of Melrose Avenue and Emerald Street in Iowa City.
From the championship tee, this scenic golf course stretches over 7,000 yards of rolling Iowa terrain, and plays to a par 72 with a USGA course rating of 74.1 and slope rating of 132.

UI Map Collection opens a world of possibilities
Where will vacation take you? Visit the UI Map Collection and ponder the possibilities.
Housed on the third floor of the Main Library, the University’s map library contains maps, aerial photographs, gazetteers, atlases, cartography references, and equipment for photo scanning.
The collection is open to the public from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday during the three-week summer session which ends June 10.
County atlases from the 1870s to the 1930s are available for all Iowa counties on microfilm. A number of these atlases have been digitized for the Iowa Heritage Digital Collections and are available online at http://iowaheritage.lib.uiowa.edu/.

Dancer Alex Ko to read from memoir
What's happening? Former Iowa City student and dancer Alex Ko will talk and sign copies of his book, Alex Ko: From Iowa to Broadway, My Billy Elliot Story. Alex Ko made his Broadway debut at age thirteen in the title role of Billy in the Tony Award-winning Billy Elliot: The Musical.
Ko studied dance from the time he was five years old, and at the age of twelve became the youngest student ever admitted to the University of Iowa Dance Department, where he received college credit with honors distinction.

Leadership for Equity and Inclusion Workshop

The University of Iowa community is invited to participate a conference called “Leadership for Equity and Inclusion” from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.on Friday, June 7.
This workshop is highly interactive and hands on, and is definitely not your typical “diversity training.” Participants will be prompted to engage in a lot of self-reflection and sharing, practice talking about the messages we internalize about our own and others’ groups, correct misinformation through “caucus” sessions, learn through the sharing of personal stories and experiences, and finally, learn to address hurtful jokes, comments, and slurs.

UI Museum First Friday: Celebrate Carnaval!
Get in the Carnaval spirit at the next University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA) First Friday event from 5-7 p.m, Friday, June 7. Domby, located at 128 E. Washington, will host the celebration with light refreshments.
