Children of deployed military parents more at risk for alcohol, drug use

Data from a statewide survey of sixth, eighth, and 11th-grade Iowa students found an increased risk for alcohol use, binge drinking, using marijuana and other illegal drugs, and misusing prescription drugs among children of deployed or recently returned military parents compared to children in nonmilitary families. Cancer in Iowa

The latest annual report on cancer in Iowa estimates 6,400 Iowans will die from cancer in 2013, 17 times the number of deaths caused by auto fatalities. In addition, an estimated 17,300 new cancers will be diagnosed among Iowa residents, according to the “Cancer in Iowa: 2013” report released today by the State Health Registry of Iowa, based in the University of Iowa College of Public Health.
