The University of Iowa has been designated a Home Base Iowa Certified Higher Academic Military Partner (CHAMP) for its work to educate and assist veterans on campus.

The CHAMP designation marks the UI as a veteran friendly university for having on-campus veteran resources, being mindful of service member transitions, and financial considerations.

“It is our duty to ensure veterans successfully transition into and through their education at the University of Iowa,” says UI’s Chief Diversity Officer Georgina Dodge. “This designation reflects the good work we are doing to provide our veterans with the skills they need to have rewarding careers.”

The designation comes after Gov. Terry Branstad and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds launched the Home Base Iowa initiative in November 2013.

Among other action, the public-private partnership gives veterans, their spouses, and dependents in-state tuition at Iowa’s colleges and universities.

The program allows Iowa colleges and universities to become certified for their ability to assist veterans on campus. It also offers community designations.

“Today’s announcement of additional Home Base Iowa Communities and Home Base Iowa Certified Higher Academic Military Partners ensures services members transitioning to civilian life have welcoming communities, educational resources and jobs— all here in Iowa,” Reynolds says.

The Home Base Iowa Act focuses on recruiting service members to Iowa and matching them with good, high-paying careers and the educational resources necessary to reach them.
