The University of Iowa Lecture Committee will kick off its fall semester lecture series on Thursday, Aug. 28, with actor Jeffrey Tambor.

“Performing Your Life,” the seventh annual Cassandra S. Foens, M.D. Lecture will begin at 8 p.m. in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union (IMU). Doors open at 7:15 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.

A veteran of film, television, and the Broadway stage, Tambor has appeared in such popular programs as “The Larry Sanders Show” and “Arrested Development,” as well as in the films “And Justice for All” and “Meet Joe Black.”

He has also received numerous honors for his professional work, including six Emmy nominations and two Screen Actors Guild Awards, as well a Television Critics Association Award nomination for Outstanding Individual Achievement in a Comedy Series. However, his greatest honors have come in his personal life, which he willingly shares with his audiences.

Other upcoming lectures for the fall semester include the following, which are in cooperation with the UI Public Policy Center:

• A film screening of “Dirty Business: ‘Clean Coal’ and the Battle for Our Energy Future,” from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014, in Shambaugh Auditorium.
• “Meeting the Renewable Energy Challenge” Expo from 2 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15, and Symposium from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16, in the Main Lounge of the IMU.
• A debate entitled: “Resolved: That the U.S. Congress should implement a plan to achieve 100% renewable energy by 2030,” featuring Mark Jacobson from Stanford University and Robert Bryce from the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research from 7 to 9 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 15, in the Main Lounge of the IMU.
• James Hansen, formerly director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies and adjunct professor at Columbia University’s Earth Institute, will present a lecture, “Speaking Truth to Power: Lessons from Iowa and Relevance to Global Climate Policies,” at 7 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 16, in the Main Lounge of the IMU.

For more than 30 years, the University Lecture Committee has brought some of the world’s great thinkers to the UI campus. Speakers have included an impressive roster of national and international figures in science, politics, business, human rights, law, and the arts. The series is funded through student fees with additional private support.
