Ritmocano

The University of Iowa School of Music will present a free performance by Ritmocano, a new Latin jazz group formed by UI jazz faculty member James Dreier, at 1 p.m. Sunday, March 9, in the University Capitol Centre Recital Hall.

Ritmocano includes UI faculty Paul Cunliffe (dance) on percussion and Damani Phillips (jazz and African American studies) on alto sax, plus area musicians Steve Shanley (piano), Greg Mazunik (bass), Rich Medd (trombone), and Ed East (percussion).

The recital program will include original compositions by Dreier, plus music from Latin jazz greats such as Ray Vega, Victor Mendoza, and others. This group, along with a select group of additional musicians, has completed recording sessions for a new Latin jazz CD called Familia, A Latin Jazz Journey. This CD has a release date of April 15.

The School of Music is part of the Division of Performing Arts in the UI College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
