Offices and Awards

Faculty—

Dr. Ghadeer Thalji, assistant professor in the Department of Prosthodontics, has been selected to receive the 2013 GlaxoSmithKline Prosthodontist Innovator Award.

The one-year funding will be used for Thalji's project, "Comparative Assessment of Alternative Macrophage Differentiation in an Early Osseointegration Model in Healthy Non-Obese Patients vs. Obese Type II Diabetics." Co-investigators on the project will include Dr. Clark Stanford, Department of Prosthodontics and Dows; Dr. Lyndon Cooper, University of North Carolina; and Dr. Deborah Dawson, director, Biostatistics Unit.

Students—

Graduate student Andrew Schrepf has been awarded an individual National Research Service Award from the National Cancer Institute at National Institutes of Health. The award will provide a full graduate student stipend for three years to support his research on the "Inflammatory Basis of Depression in Ovarian Cancer." The work will be carried out under the supervision of Andrew's advisor, professor Kim Johnson.

Alumna—

Mary Laube (Master of Fine Arts, '12) adjunct lecturer in the Painting and Drawing area of the School of Art and Art History, received an Iowa Arts Council individual artist project grants for 2014.

Roses and Rue explores the relationship between two analogous genres: poetry and painting. Laube will produce a series of paintings that correspond to poems written by Kiley McLaughlin, an Iowa City poet. Roses and Rue will be presented as a joint exhibition and reading for the public of Iowa City and its communities of poets and painters. Laube was awarded $3,995.

Ian Etter, (Master of Fine Arts, '13) adjunct lecturer in the Painting and Drawing area of the School of Art and Art History, received an Iowa Arts Council individual artist project grant for 2014.

Etter was awarded $3,916 and will execute and exhibit the multi-media, performance-based project, Manned Mock Mars Mission (MMMM). MMMM aims to connect the arts to science by blending the history of the settlement of the American West and the history of interplanetary exploration.The project seeks to engage Iowans in a conversation about the parallels inherent in artistic and scientific investigation.

Kyle Phillips (Bachelor of Arts, '09) has been awarded the 2014 Rising Star award from the Journalism Education Association. The award will be presented April 12 during the JEA/NSPA Spring National High School Journalism Convention in San Diego, Calif.

Natalie Niemeyer (Bachelor of Arts, '11) has been awarded the 2014 Rising Star award from the Journalism Education Association. The award will be presented April 12 during the JEA/NSPA Spring National High School Journalism Convention in San Diego, Calif.

Megan Ortiz (Bachelor of Arts, '03) has been awarded the 2014 Rising Star award from the Journalism Education Association. The award will be presented April 12 during the JEA/NSPA Spring National High School Journalism Convention in San Diego, Calif.
