Offices and Awards

Faculty—

Dr. James Clancy, associate professor in the Department of Prosthodontics, received the James H. McLeran faculty award on Sept. 25.

The McLeran Award honors recipients for their exemplary clinical and teaching skills.

Greg Carmichael, Karl Kammermeyer Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, associate dean for graduate programs and research, co-director of the Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research, and inaugural director of the UI informatics initiative, has been appointed as a member of the NASA Advisory Board Earth Science Subcommittee.

The subcommittee is one of five reporting to the NASA Advisory Board. It provides counsel to develop a scientific understanding of the Earth system and its response to natural and human-induced changes to enable improved prediction of climate, weather, and natural hazards for present and future generations.

Brian An, assistant professor in the College of Education, presented "The effects of binge drinking on critical thinking over four years of college," at the annual meeting of the Association for the Study of Higher Education, St. Louis in November.

Ronald Fielder, professor in the College of Education, presented "The Age of Partnerships: Cities & Schools Working Together," at the Annual Conference, Iowa League of Cities, Dubuque, Iowa on Sept. 26.

Liz Hollingworth, associate professor in the College of Education, presented "A Cross Comparative International Study on the Concept of Wisdom," at the International Conference on Talent Development and Excellence Annual Meeting, ICTDE, Antalya, Turkey in September.

Hollingworth also presented the following at the University Council of Educational Administration Annual Meeting, Indianapolis, Ind. in November.

Christine Ogren, associate professor in the College of Education presented the keynote address, "State Normal Schools and the Expansion of Educational Opportunity: Minot State’s Origins in a National Context," at the Great Plains Symposium, Minot State University Centennial Celebration, Minot, N.D. on Oct. 11.

Ogren also presented "Summers Off: Exploring American Teachers' Other Three Months," at the History of Education Society annual meeting, History of Education Society, Nashville, Tenn. on Oct. 31.

Ernest Pascarella, professor in the College of Education, presented "The effects of binge drinking on critical thinking over four years of college," at the annual meeting of the Association for the Study of Higher Education at St. Louis in November.

Michael Paulsen, professor in the College of Education, presented "Graduate Teaching Assistants: Struggling to Teach at a Large Research University," at the annual meeting of the Association for the Study of Higher Education, St. Louis, Mo. in November.

Carolyn Wanat, associate professor in the College of Education, presented "Expanding the Educational Leadership Community: Retired Women Professors," at the University Council of Educational Administration in Indianapolis, Ind. on Nov. 9.

Stephen Alessi, associate professor in the College of Education, presented "In pursuit of better on-line learning," at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Mass. on Oct. 16.

Kathy Schuh, associate professor in the College of Education, presented "Factors associated with instructors’ and students’ successful adoption of learning tools in interactive e-textbooks," at the 10th Annual Conference of the International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Annual Conference, International Society for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, in Raleigh, N.C. on Oct. 2.

David Duys, associate professor in the College of Education, presented "Program Coordination: Leading from the Middle," at the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision National Conference, in Denver, Colo. on Oct. 19.
