Matthew Rizzo, UI professor of neurology and mechanical and industrial engineering, is the 2013 recipient of the Bartimaeus Award from the Detroit Institute of Ophthalmology. The award, presented at the 6th biennial World Congress on the Eye, the Brain, and the Auto 2013, recognizes research excellence in the area of vision and driving.
Rizzo, an expert in the role of vision and cognition in everyday tasks, including driving, also is director of the Aging Mind and Brain Initiative at the UI.
Arthur Bonfield, associate dean in the UI College of Law, is a recipient of the Friends of the First Amendment award from the Iowa Freedom of Information Council. Bonfieldis recognized for his work in reforming the Iowa open meetings and records laws.
He will receive the award at the council’s Celebrating a Free Press and Open Government dinner in early October.
Christine A. Ogren, associate professor of educational policy and leadership studies in the College of Education, has been elected vice-president/president elect of the History of Education Society. Ogren will serve a three-year term from 2013-16.
A 2013 Doris Duke Clinical Scientist Development Award went toVinit B. Mahajan, assistant professor of ophthalmology and visual sciences and a clinician-scientist in the Stephen A. Wynn Institute for Vision Research, Carver College of Medicine.
Given to only 16 scientists nationwide, the award helps facilitate the transition of junior physician-scientists to independent clinical research careers.
The grant of $486,000 from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation will support Mahajan’s project titled "Molecular Genetic Mechanisms of Calpain-5 Autoimmunity." The project aims to determine the underlying molecular mechanisms of mutations in CAPN5-associated autoimmune uveitis. Findings will help determine therapeutic approaches for uveitis and other common eye diseases with photoreceptor degeneration and retinal neovascularization.
James Clancy, associate professor in the College of Dentistry, has been inducted into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Catherine Welch, professor of psychological and quantitative foundations and Iowa Testing Programs (ITP), both in the College of Education, has been selected to receive the first Leonard and Natalie Feldt ITP Faculty Fellowship. This five-year fellowship provides financial support for research activities and materials, professional travels, and conference presentations.
Alumna—
Aurore Mroz (M.A. '08, Ph.D. '12) has been named 2013 recipient of the ACTFL-MLJ Emma Marie Birkmaier Award for Doctoral Dissertation Research in Foreign Language Education. Mroz will be honored with this national award at the ACTFL conference in November 2013.

Ronald Ettinger, professor of prosthodontics and a Dows Institute investigator in the College of Dentistry, attended the 2013 meeting of the European Prosthodontic Association and the Scandinavian Society for Prosthetic Dentistry, Aug. 21-24 in Turku, Finland. As the keynote speaker, Ettinger presented the Oxford Lecture, “How to Manage Patients with Alzheimer’s Disease and Other Dementias in the Dental Office.”
David Drake, professor of endodontics and Dows Institute investigator, and Peter Damiano, professor of preventive and community dentistry, both in the College of Dentistry, attended the 2013 Institute for Oral Health Conference: The Impact of Policy on Oral Health Care Delivery.
Drake presented "The Oglala Sioux Tribe Smiles Study: Microbiology of Severe Early Childhood Caries in American Indian Children," about his research on the severity of early childhood caries in American Indian populations compared to others in the United States
Damiano presented "The Affordable Care Act: The Short- and Longer-Term Implications for Oral Health,” which explained factors driving the discussion about health care reform in the United States. The meeting was held Sept. 12-13 in Washington, D.C.
