Faculty—
Al Ratner, associate professor of mechanical and industrial engineering, has received the first Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) Leadership in Outreach and Mentoring Award.
Ratner was recognized for mentoring junior faculty, advocating for summer interns, and making more spaces in his lab for students.
The award was announced at Iowa EPSCoR’s Annual All-Hands Meeting July 22-23 at the University of Northern Iowa.
Olesya Zhupanska, Robert and Virginia Wheeler faculty fellow of engineering, associate professor of mechanical and industrial engineering, and researcher at the UI Center for Computer-Aided Design, has been selected to receive the Best Paper Award from the American Society for Composites for her paper, "Effect of Carbon Nanotube Buckypaper Layers on the Electrical and Impact Response of IM7/977-3 Composite Laminates."
Co-authors are graduate students Chris Hill and Yeqing Wang. Hill graduated with a Bachelor of Science/Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering in 2011. Yeqing Wang is a doctoral student in the mechanical engineering program.
Tad Mabry, clinical associate professor in the UI Department of Pediatric Dentistry, has received the 2012-13 College of Dentistry's Collegiate Teaching award, the college’s highest honor recognizing excellence in teaching.
Aron Aji, adjunct professor of comparative literature in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences,was recently shortlisted for the PEN Translation Prize for his translation with Fred Stark of A Long Day's Evening by Bilge Karasu.
Students—
Anurima Majumder, post-doctoral scholar in the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics at the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, was recently awarded a 2013 Pediatric Ophthalmology Career-Starter Research Grant presented by the Knights Templar Eye Foundation.
The $60,000, one-year grant supports original student-initiated projects directly related to pediatric eye diseases.

Clark Stanford, associate dean for research and professor in the department of Prosthodontics, presented, "Measurement approaches for bone loss under complete dentures," at a workshop at Guys Hospital in London on July 11-12.

A paper co-authored by David Lavers, postdoctoral research scholar at IIHR—Hydroscience and Engineering, and Gabriele Villarini,assistant professor of civil and environmental engineering and assistant research engineer at IIHR, was selected by the editors of Geophysical Research Letters as an American Geophysical Union (AGU) "Research Spotlight." The summary of the work, titled "The nexus between atmospheric rivers and extreme precipitation across Europe," will be featured inEos,AGU's weekly newspaper.
