Update (12:24 p.m. Thursday, April 18, 2013): Both of the northbound and southbound lanes of Dubuque Street have reopened, and Cambus service has returned to normal outside of Mayflower Residence Hall. HESCO barriers are being placed in the Mayflower parking lot to contain the mud and debris and to help with the cleanup process.

Update (11:09 a.m. Thursday, April 18, 2013): The two southbound lanes of Dubuque Street have been reopened. Both northbound lanes remain closed. Mayflower residents may cross Dubuque to access the sidewalk.

Heavy rains overnight caused a mudslide behind Mayflower Residence Hall late Wednesday night and flooded parts of Dubuque Street, leading this morning to the closure of its north and south lanes from the front of Mayflower to just south of Foster Road and forcing the rerouting of Cambus service.

Meanwhile, the Interdorm, Mayflower Shuttle and Hawkeye-Interdorm Cambuses will be diverted from Mayflower Hall to the Hancher Lot, where they will turn around. Mayflower residents can catch the buses on the Park Road bridge at the designated Cambus bus stops. There is a bus stop on both the north and south side of the bridge. The mudslide occurred when part of the bluff behind Mayflower collapsed around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, filling the parking lot behind the dorm with up to 5 feet of mud and debris, damaging several vehicles. Crews are working to remove the mud and debris.

As a result, the back parking lot is closed to traffic until further notice and vehicles will not be able to leave or enter the lot. Students, staff and visitors are also urged to refrain from using the back door entrance.

University classes are continuing as scheduled and students are encouraged to allow for extra time to get to and from classrooms because of the weather and standing water in low-lying spots.
