Clary Salandy, an internationally known carnival designer, will talk about her work during a free, public lecture at 7:30 p.m. in the University of Iowa Old Capitol Museum Senate Chamber on Wednesday, April 24. Her lecture is the second of two sponsored by the UI Museum of Art as part of Iowa City’s first Carnaval celebration this summer.

Born in Trinidad and trained in theater design at St. Martin’s in London, Salandy is a carnival artist, theater designer and three-dimensional design tutor specializing in large-scale body sculptures. She studied at the Wimbledon School of Art and is internationally known for her innovative carnival designs, for which she has won many awards. Salandy has taught art foundation courses at Central St. Martins School of Art and at the Prince of Wales’s Institute of Architecture. She has also lectured nationally and internationally.

As artistic director of Mahogany Community Ventures Limited, founded in 1989 with fellow designer Michael Ramdeen, she has established a center of excellence for Carnival, designed to raise the awareness of the arts in the community. Mahogany plays a key role in the regeneration of local communities being a focus for the arts from this unique Carnival Arts studio in Harlesden. For the past 20 years, Mahogany has presented performances at the Notting Hill carnival and at other carnivals worldwide.
