The Board of Regents, State of Iowa, recently approved plans to establish the Iowa Institute of Human Genetics (IIHG) as a statewide resource to promote personalized genomic clinical medicine, research, and education focused on medical and scientific advances around the human genome.

The director of the IIHG, Richard Smith, M.D., says the institute builds on existing university-wide strengths in human genetics, including translational genetic research that is on going in many colleges and departments across the campus.

The IIHG will play an integral part in the “Live Healthy” initiatives for Iowans by facilitating the implementation of personalized genomic medicine as a component of the high quality of clinical care the University of Iowa provides to all Iowans.
