Which social sororities and fraternities were founded at the University of Iowa?

The answer: Two multicultural Greek-letter organizations were founded at Iowa: Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity and Sigma Lambda Gamma National Sorority.

Sigma Lambda Beta, a historically Latino-based social fraternity, was started by 18 students at the UI in 1986. It now has more than 100 collegiate entities and 15 alumni associations across the country.

Sigma Lambda Gamma, a historically Latina-based sorority, was founded by five students at the UI in 1990. It is now the largest historically Latina-based national sorority in the country with close to 3,000 sisters and alumnae.

Both groups promote multiculturalism, with an emphasis on awareness of Latino/a culture. National headquarters for both groups are located in the Iowa City area.
